Frequently Asked Questions:
What is a Notary Public?
A Notary is usually a qualified solicitor but he or she will have attained the additional qualification of a Notary Public and is a member of a separate profession governed not by The Law Society but by the Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Very few solicitors are also Notaries. Conversely, a Notary Public may not always be a solicitor. A Notary Public is authorised to witness and authenticate the signature of documents for use outside the legal jurisdiction of England and Wales. This includes the provision of certified copy documents and the administration of oaths and declarations.
Why do I need a Notary?
To authenticate or verify documentation or administer oaths and declarations in connection with transactions, commercial or otherwise, in other countries anywhere in the world. In such
cases you may find that your document is unacceptable in the country concerned unless it has been notarised. In many cases the document will have to be produced, after notarisation, at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London and sometimes also at the Embassy of the country concerned. A Notary will be aware of the particular requirements as these will differ from country to country.
Peter Scragg is a retired solicitor who is continuing his separate practice as a Notary. The Service may be provided by appointment at this office, or at his or your own place of business. Please telephone for an estimate of charges or contact Peter directly on:
